Getting started
Connect over SSH
Open a server shell from macOS, Linux or Windows and confirm root access.
Get the connection details
Obtain the server's public IP, SSH port, login user and authentication method from your hosting provider. Keep the provider console available in case a firewall or SSH setting prevents access.
macOS, Linux and Windows Terminal
Open Terminal or PowerShell with OpenSSH installed:
ssh SERVER_USER@SERVER_IP
For a non-default port:
ssh -p SSH_PORT SERVER_USER@SERVER_IP
Replace the uppercase placeholders. If you use a private key, add -i /path/to/key. The first connection asks you to verify the host key fingerprint. Compare it with a trusted provider record before accepting. Password input is normally invisible.
Windows with a graphical SSH client
Enter the server address and port, select SSH, then provide the assigned user and password or private key. A terminal window should open after authentication.
Confirm the shell
whoami
The installation requires root. If your provider gives a sudo-capable account, use sudo -i and check again. Keep the connection open while the installer runs.
Connection errors
A timeout usually points to the IP, port, routing or firewall. Permission denied points to the account, password or key. A changed host key needs investigation; do not delete the stored fingerprint without confirming why it changed. Use the provider console if the normal SSH path is unavailable.
